When matched with a variable speed indoor unit from Trane, the XL20i has another special feature. It’s a method of enhancing airflow that we call Comfort-R™ and it gives you greater humidity control in cooling. This is accomplished by running the fan at a slower speed during start-up. Comfort-R™ also provides warmer air during heating start-up. These managed cycles reduce temperature variances for the optimum in home comfort.

FHP Manufacturing

Once installed, the loop in a Geothermal system remains out of sight beneath the earth’s surface as it works to utilize the thermal storage capability of the earth. A variety of loop configurations can be used, depending on which is most suitable and cost effective for the building’s location and the HVAC loads. Closed loops may be installed vertically/horizontally in the ground, or in a body of water, while open loop systems utilize water wells. The fluid that circulates through the closed loop systems is usually a mixture of water and anti-freeze solution. Some of the typical Geothermal Systems are as follows:

Vertical Loop System

Vertical Loops are installed in vertical bore holes 150 to 500 feet deep depending on the design considerations. Each hole contains a single set or a dual set of pipes. After the pipe is inserted, the hole is grouted. The number of loops required depends on ground conditions, air conditioning and heating load and depth of each hole. This design is well-suited for applications where minimal space is available and minimum soil disruption is desired.

Horizontal Loop System

Horizontal Loops are utilized when adequate space is available and trenching can be easily accomplished (i.e. new construction). A series of parallel pipes are laid out in trenches 3 to 6 feet deep then back filled. A slinky coil configuration can minimize the amount of trenching involved in this system. This design is well-suited for application where bore hole drilling is difficult or where physical space allows.

Open Loop System

Where ground water is plentiful, an Open Loop System may be utilized with Geothermal Heat Pumps. The Open Loop System has ground water pumped directly through the condenser water piping or an intermediate plate frame heat exchanger can be utilized to isolate the condenser water from the raw well water. This system usually has supply wells and return wells for the water system. This system eliminates the ground or lake heat exchanger and requires minimum excavation, however typically does require more maintenance.

Pond/Lake Loop System

The outstanding heat transfer properties of water make the lake or pond loop system an extremely cost effective geothermal application. The heat exchanger is submerged in a series of coils beneath the water surface rather than buried in the ground as in the previous systems. This system offers minimum excavation and great efficiency.

Hybrid System

Under certain design conditions it may be desirable to incorporate a cooling tower into the geothermal design to reduce the cost of the ground loop and the installed first cost. When the cooling load is much greater than the heating load, a cooling tower can be added to the system to help reject the heat only during the extreme summer conditions. Since you don’t have to size the ground heat exchanger for the peak load conditions and cooling towers are typically low cost, this type system can meet tight budget constraints. Since there is a tower added to the system maintenance cost do typically go up somewhat, however the Geothermal benefits always outweigh the added costs.
